It was time for a change of scene. We checked out of the hotel…
Found a well rated local place on the way to the train station.
Karl was worried, he was worried about the train out to the coast.
Me? I was sitting pretty in a Parisian cafe about to have an amazing breakfast. Not a care on my mind.
A delicious tartine-baggette with butter and jam. I had seriously the most amazing poached eggs on avocado toast. YUMMMMMMMM.
We were half a mile from the train station, with 20 minutes to go. Our tickets sai that we only needed to be there a couple of minutes before departure so we were not in too big of a rush. We took a couple of scooters over to the station. We got turned around, and a little lost. Then Karl’s scooter died, TWICE. By the time we got to the station, the train was leaving in 6 minutes. The station was sprawling. Nothing was labeled in English, and nothing was labeled clearly. We got help from several different attendants. Pointed us in the right direction. We got to the gate, the man scanned out tickets. Karl was not sure that we were in the right place. We got to our seats, and they were filled. Karl was worried. Were we on the wrong train. We got to the front compartment of the train, and found an employee, she said that yes, this train would get us there, but there was a second step to our destination. That made Karl worry. We were supposed to take one train to a bus. After following our trip, we were on the right path, we didn’t have to switch trains.
He relaxed a little.
We made it to our stop.
When we got to the next station, we had 10 minutes to print our tickets and get to our bus. Which we did. From the bus, we got to a shuttle station. We were guided by a nice lady at the visitors center, and at last we were in view of our destination…
Mount St. Michel.
At first views, it was breathtaking.
It comes out of the water like Hogwarts!
We walked into the little village and it was something that had been frozen in time.
Surrounded by water on all sides, when the tide is in at least.
We sent the kids a polo from the top of the wall.
We wondered around a bit.
We left our bags at the desk of our hotel, yes we were staying on the island, and went slowly wondering up to the Abby. We got out tickets, and our audio guides and went right in.
The hike up to the entrance of the abby was quite a hike. Then there we went up up up more stairs.
Until we found ourselves on top of the abby. and what a lovely view from the top.
The polo we sent to the kids.
My handsome Karl.
Then in to the chapel of the abby.
Then we wondered into this place: The Cloister.
There was a huge window (now covered in glass) giving more ocean views.
Another Harry Potter moment. All of it was just so pleasing to eye.
It was so quiet in there. I just wanted to get my scriptures and journal and thing about God. Seriously. It was made to be a quiet beautiful place to reflect, like the temple. |
Into one of the many great rooms. According to our audi guides, this is where the monks used to eat.
The achidterure in this room was crazy. The walls with the windows in them, were 5 feet deep. But the way they are made, hides their depth. They need to suppodt the weight of the heavy roof above.
A carving of St. Michael. Their patron Saint.
Onward, into another room.
Here is one to stop and tell about. They used this mechanism to haul stuff up to the abby. When it became a prison, they used prisoners to do it.
Pretty stunning views.
Again, another Harry Potter thing…looks like the room of requirement!
St. Micheal himself looking down on us as we left.
We watched the sun set from the water’s edge.
Now that’s all over, we checked into our hotel. The person there was TERRIBLE with costumer service. They literally made us wait for 20 minutes, and never even said hello.
We grabbed a little snack. And then got all checked in. We needed a minute to get settled, and then we went out for dinner.
Looking handsome.
More wandering around.
We had dinner at the hotel restaurant. My meal was a Mont St. Michel omelette, fries and steak. Karl had the chicken, with Lima beans on the side, that I ate.
Dessert? Creme Brulee.
There is a little shop that has all vending machines. We bought cookies, and soda. We had a wonderful night watching french TV and eating cookies. They were these amazing butter cookies. SO delicious. We bought three tins to take home with us the next day.
